In a major faux pas, the Punjab Assembly’s obituary reference to the the Army personnel of the Madras Regiment who died in the avalanche in Siachen Glacier were referred to as martyrs of Seema Suraksha Bal (Border Security Force).
The obituary reference listed the nine martyrs who lost their lives in Siachen avalanche at item number 12 under the erroneous heading. A separate mention was also made of Lance Naik Hanamanthapa on item number 13 but he was also stated to be from Seema Suraksha Bal and his name was also misspelt as Hanuman Thapa. The mistake of categorising the Army jawans as those from the Border Security Force escaped all members of the house as no one pointed it out to the Speaker.
The assembly also paid tributes to the officer and jawans who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on Pathankot Air Force Station. The Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal also paid tributes to Former Punjab Governor Lt Gen JFR Jacob (retd), former Speakers of Lok Sabha, Balram Jakhar and PA Sangma, noted Amritsar social servant Brij Bedi and twice decorated with Mahavir Chakra, Brigadier Sant Singh (retd).
The Leader of Opposition, Charanjit Singh Channi, asked the Speaker to include the names of the 13,000 farmers who had committed suicide due to farm debt but his request was not allowed.
Tributes were also paid to nine freedom fighters, Brij Mohan Lal Munjab, noted industrialists, Justice NK Sanghi of Punjab and Haryana High Court and former Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, Harnam Das Johar. A two-minute silence was also observed in the honour of those who had been mentioned in the obituary reference.
