The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday stayed the trial court proceedings in the FIR registered against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira and 12 other Congress workers registered at Bholath police station in October 2008 for obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions.

The orders came from Justice Ajay Tewari on a petition moved by Khaira and Congress workers seeking quashing of the FIR and subsequent legal proceedings against them. At the time of registration of FIR, Khaira was a Congress leader.

Petitioners’ advocate Surjit Singh Swaich submitted that the present case is one of the many frivolous cases registered against Khaira at the behest of Punjab Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Bholath MLA Bibi Jagir Kaur due to bitter political tussle.

The case is pending in the High Court since July 2014. The next hearing of the case is on.
