BJP’s UP vice president Dayashankar Singh on Wednesday caused big embarrassment to the party by comparing BSP supremo Mayawati to a prostitute. Singh said that Maya offers party ticket in lieu of money and is worst than sex workers who are more loyal to their customers. The remark triggered uproar in Rajya Sabha with demands for Singh’s immediate arrest. The BJP was quick to act and sacked Singh despite his apology to the BSP chief.
This was not the first time when a leader in UP has let down the party with his irresponsible comment. From Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti to Yogi Adityanath and Sakshi Maharaj, there have been many leaders whose venomous speeches and offensive statements had put the party’s top leadership on sticky wicket.
Sadhvi Prachi: Though not a part of Sadhvi Prachi, the pro Hindutva leader has always been in news for delivering speeches inciting hatred against Muslims. Recently, she announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh to any person “who will behead” Islamic preacher and televangelist Zakir Naik. She had also said that it is time to make India, Muslim-free.
During the intolerance debate, she had called for the boycotting of the Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan, suggesting that their films were spreading a culture of violence.
Sakshi Maharaj: The BJP MP from Unnao coined the term Love Jihad and said that said the madrasas were creating terrorists and they encourage their students to carry marry Hindu girls. The controversial figre of the BJP had also called Nathruak Godse, the assassin of Mahatama Gandhi, a “patriot and nationalist”.
During a rally in Meerut in 2015, Sakshi had urged Hindu women to produce at least four children to protect Hinduism in India. Defending Ghar Wapsi, he had also argued for death sentence for cow slaughter and religious conversion.
Yogi Adityanath: A Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath is one of the pioneeers of Hindutva ideology. He stroked a controversy when he said that communal riots happen in the places where a particular minority community constitute 20-40 percent of the total population. He had also compared Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed and asked him to go to Pakistan. “Shah Rukh Khan should remember that if a huge mass in society would boycot his films, he will also have to wander on streets like a normal Muslim….I am saying these people are speaking in a terrorist’ language,” Yogi had said.
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti: Addressing voters in west Delhi’s Shyam Nagar, the Union Minister had told voters, “Aapko tay karna hai ki Dilli mein sarkar Ramzadon ki banegi ya har**zadon ki. Yeh aapka faisla hai (you have to decide whether Delhi will get a government of those born of Ram or of those born illegitimately).” The reaction from the opposition to this remark was so strong that PM Modi issued a diktat to the party leaders for not speaking out of turn.
Dayashankar Singh: “Mayawati is selling tickets like a prostitute. She gives tickets for Rs one crore and if there is someone who can give Rs 2 crore than she sells it for Rs 2 crore within an hour. If someone is ready to give Rs 3 crore by the evening, she gives the ticket to him. She is even worse than prostitute,” Singh had said.
