THE PRIVILEGES committee has decided to seek a written response from HRD Minister Smriti Irani following a complaint of a breach of privilege made by CPM leader Sitaram Yechury. The complaint pertains to Irani’s remarks, made in the course of a debate on the JNU row and suicide by Hyderabad University student Rohith Vemula, in the Rajya Sabha during the first part of the Budget Session.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari had admitted the notice and referred the matter to the panel, headed by senior Congress leader P J Kurien, deputy chairman of the Upper House. In his complaint, Yechury said Irani had made a reference to Goddess Durga while attributing certain remarks to him. He maintained that he had never made those remarks.
