THE MUMBAI Police is likely to file a chargesheet in the Pratyusha Banerjee suicide case next week, charging the television actor’s producer-actor boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh with abetment to suicide. Banerjee, 24, who shot to fame with the role of Anandi in TV serial ‘Balika Vadhu’, committed suicide by hanging herself in April this year.
According to sources, the probe revealed that the couple had a turbulent relationship for the last one year with Singh wanting to move on and call off the relationship. The sources said the chargesheet will also attach transcripts of calls and text message exchanged between the couple, which allegedly indicate that Banerjee was “upset” with Singh, whom she held responsible for creating a rift between her and her parents. Banerjee was also upset with Singh for living off her earnings, the sources claimed.
“The trouble in the relationship began a year ago after Banerjee’s career got stagnant. She used to fund Singh’s expenses but had time and again expressed her apprehension on continuing to do so. There are text exchanges in which she has accused him of ‘living off’ her money. Months before she took the extreme step, there are text exchanges and also witness statements which show that Banerjee held Singh responsible for distancing her from her parents,” claimed a source. “We also have evidence to show that after Banerjee expressed her displeasure at having to finance him, he threatened to call off the relationship which led to frequent showdowns between the couple,” the source claimed.

In a recorded conversation that took place hours before the suicide, which will be part of the chargesheet, Banerjee is allegedly heard saying, “You cheater, tumne mujhe cheat kiya hai, mujhe mere maa baap se alag kar diya, ab dekho main kya karne ja rahi (You have cheated on me and distanced me from my parents, see what I do now).”
On April 1, Banerjee committed suicide by hanging herself inside her flat in suburban Goregaon. Two days later, following a complaint by her parents, a case under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 504, 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Singh, who moved the Bombay High Court seeking interim relief from arrest.
The Mumbai police is likely to state in the chargesheet that Rahul also cheated an aspiring model, taking money in lieu of helping her bag a role in a TV serial. “This is a different case but we will make a mention of it as it will help build our narrative against Singh,” another source added.
Sources also add that while forensic reports do state that Banerjee had an abortion a few months before the suicide, the same cannot be linked to the case.
“The abortion was done with consent between the couple and there is no evidence to link it with her decision to end her life, therefore we haven’t dwelt much upon the same in our chargesheet,” added the source.
