Police are inquiring into reports that Maoists allegedly tried to stop Independence Day celebrations in some schools in Kitahatu and Ulihatu areas of Jharkhand’s Khunti district.

This comes days after Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Ulihatu, the native village of tribal icon Birsa Munda. Singh also addressed a gathering on the same day in Kitahatu.

Police said some reports in the morning said Maoists hoisted black flags and tried to stop unfurling of the tricolor at some schools.

“However, when the force reached there, they did not find any evidence that black flags were unfurled. We are inquiring into it,” said SDPO, Khunti, Ranvir Singh.

SP Anish Gupta said: “Nothing has been confirmed so far. We are inquiring into the matter.”

District Superintendent of Education, Mithilesh Kumar, said: “We have not received any such report.”
