Police chargesheet in Abohar murder case: ‘Scientific, technical probes do not concretely link Doda with murder’

The chargesheet says Ranjit Singh in his December 11 complaint stated that Taank, a former president of a transport union, had enmity with two people, who are among the accused, because they used to extort money from vehicle owners.

THE PUNJAB Police chargesheet against politician-cum-liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda in the Abohar murder case has a twist in the tale – it says an offence is made out against Doda but then adds that “scientific and technical investigations do not concretely link” him to the gruesome killing at his farmhouse.

The police have said that investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), statements of witnesses, records of phone numbers with whom he had phone conversations and documents show that Doda was involved in the Bhim Taank murder case.

But the seven page chargesheet — copies of which are with The Indian Express — adds that “the scientific and technical investigations do not concretely link Shiv Lal Doda” to the murder case.

After evading arrest for more than a month after the murder at his farmhouse of Bheem Taank, a Dalit youth, who had earlier worked for him in his liquor business, Doda surrendered before the Fazilka SSP on January 22, a day after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The police had slapped a case of criminal conspiracy against him.

In the chargesheet against Doda, police have cited a polygraph test report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Delhi, that says he did not make any “deceptive responses” on questions that were posed to him and was “truthful”.

The SIT was led by Deputy Inspector General Ferozepur Range and comprised Fazilka SSP, Bathinda SP (Headquarters) and Abohar SP.

“The matter is in the court. I cannot comment on this,” said Fazilka Senior Superintendent of Police Narinder Bhargav.

The chargesheet said that samples of digital video recording related to the case had been sent to CFSL Chandigarh for examination and report would be submitted before the court once it was received. The chargesheet says four samples of digital video recording were collected from the farmhouse of Doda.

As many as 26 persons were booked in the case under various sections, including murder, criminal conspiracy and under sections of the SC/ST Act (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for the murderous attack on Taank in which another youth Gurjant Singh, who was accompanying him, was injured. The case was registered on the complaint of Gurjant’s brother Ranjit Singh.

The chargesheet says Ranjit Singh in his December 11 complaint stated that Taank, a former president of a transport union, had enmity with two people, who are among the accused, because they used to extort money from vehicle owners.

Ranjit Singh said those two persons held a grudge against Taank. It adds that Doda and his nephew Amit Doda were booked for criminal conspiracy in the case after complainant Ranjit Singh further alleged that he “has learnt from his friends” that there was a conspiracy by Doda and his nephew Amit behind the murder of Taank and inflicting injuries to Gurjant Singh.
