The Aam Aadmi Party Tuesday accused the BJP of doublespeak on Afzal Guru and questioned its alliance with the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party that also backed Afzal Guru and condemned his hanging. The AAP alleged the ‘RSS had never produced a freedom fighter or a martyr’ and had ‘never unfurled the tricolour at any of its shakhas’ and should therefore not ‘preach nationalism.’
“What has the BJP or RSS done for the country? Anyone from their ideology had no role in the freedom struggle of this country nor did they ever become martyrs. But they are now handing out certificates of patriotism. The BJP tied up with the PDP in Kashmir… the same party that supported Afzal Guru and condemned his hanging,” senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said on Tuesday. “Just to become deputy CM and get ministerial berths and red-beacon cars, the BJP tied up with them. Now it should apologise to the country and get those ministers arrested. How can they be preaching nationalism?”
“The RSS sets up shakhas across the country but in 90 years of their existence they have never unfurled the tricolour in their shakhas. You do not respect the tricolour or the country but you want to stifle others’ voices… the fourth estate that wants to bring truth to the fore, you want to suppress that…,” Singh added.
Demanding the arrest of BJP legislator O P Sharma, the party questioned the role of Delhi Police and alleged it was acting on the behest of its “political bosses”. “We want the Home Ministry and Delhi Police to explain what steps have they taken to bring the culprits to book, the ones who took law into their hands at the Patiala House Complex while the policemen on duty stood as mute spectators to the atrocities,” Singh said. “We specifically want to know why Delhi Police is choosing to be passive and is standing by the criminals when the crime was committed by members of the ruling BJP. Why is there a delay in arresting BJP MLA O P Sharma who was clearly seen in visuals beating up the students and journalists.”
Singh alleged that Sharma has been a ‘vandal’ in the state legislative assembly sessions. “He has several cases registered against him. He has made objectionable comments against a woman legislator from AAP in the assembly and threatened to beat her up when she was out to stop drug-trafficking in her assembly constituency,” he added. “Yesterday, at the court premises he beat up a student who was helplessly pleading with him and said that had he a gun with him he would have shot him dead. Are these gun-toting legislators not terrorists? They (BJP) have been trying to vitiate the atmosphere of the country and intimidate the media too.”
