A 20-year-old college girl from Surat ended her life by jumping from the 11th floor of a high rise building after reportedly being rebuked by her parents about her affair with a boy outside her community. The girl left behind a suicide note asking her parents to go to Goa and have a drink instead of mourning her death.
The girl Divya Borakhiya, a resident of Deep Sagar Apartment, in Patelnagar at Udhna, was a first year B.Com student at SPB College at Athwalines in Surat city. Her father Ashwinm Borakhiya is a diamond broker at Mini Bazaar in Varachha and they belong to the Patidar community.
According to sources, Divya took up a data entry job at a private firm at Bharat. Here she met Parth, who belonged to a non-Patidar community. Divya’s parents learnt about their affair and reprimanded her.
On Monday afternoon, Divya reached Patelnagar society and, instead of going home, she jumped to death from eleventh floor of the neighbouring Vatsalya tower.
After learning about the incident, the society residents immediately gathered at the spot and identified the girl as resident of Deep Sagar Apartment. They informed the police and parents of the deceased girl. Udhna police reached the spot and took charge of the dead body. Police also found a suicide note addressed to the girl’s father.
In the suicide note, Divya asked her parents not to mourn her death. Advising her family members “to stay happy”, she said “after my death, go to Goa and have a drink each to my name and enjoy, instead of doing death rituals”.
Udhna police inspector P B Sapra said, “The motive seems to be the love affair. Also the girl’s father had told her to study and wait for four years and decide about it later. We have also taken CCTV camera footage of Vatsalya apartment in which her movement was captured. We have taken statements of her parents.”
