Thousands of people paid their last respects in Bengaluru on Monday morning to NSG officer, Lt Colonel Niranjan Kumar E K, who was killed following a terrorist attack on an IAF base at Pathankot. The body of the officer which was brought to Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday was kept at his home and later at the BEL ground in North Bengaluru, to enable people to pay respects.

cts were not just friends and family but students from several neaby schools and colleges. “We used to play cricket in this ground before Niranjan joined the army a few years ago. Unfortunately I am here today to pay last respects to him,” said Vishwas KV, a close friend of Niranjan’s young brother Shashank, at the BEL ground on Monday morning.

“Trekking was his favorite hobby. Boxing and basket ball were his favorite sports. He was supposed to come on leave around January 26, but this unfortunate incident occurred. Me and my other cousins were very fond of Niranjan. When he came home on leave we used to spend time with him,” said Sampath E K a cousin of Niranjan.

The cousin said that Niranjan was fond of taking trips to his parents home in Kerala. “Whenever he was here he would take all his cousins to Kerala on trekking trips,” Sampath said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who offered condolences to Niranjan’s family at the BEL ground around 9 am, announced a Rs 30 lakh compensation for the soldier’s family. “The state government is with Niranjan’s family and it will extend all possible help to them. The state government had given Rs 30 lakh as compensation to the family of martyr Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was killed in the Mumbai terror attack in 2008,” Siddaramaiah said.

Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda who paid his respects said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Pakistan to build peace between the two nations but Pakistan had failed to respond positively. India need to consider the attack as a challenge, Gowda said.

The body of Lt Col Niranjan is scheduled to be taken to his native place in Palakkad in Kerala on Monday evening for the final rites.
