A DAY AFTER Delhi lawyer Shailendra Singh Jaat said that his car used in alleged abduction of two men from Rajkot in year 2000 as part of a conspiracy hatched by mafia and terror organisations to extract ransom, was destroyed in a road accident subsequently, a team of Rajkot Crime Branch left for Delhi to verify the claim on Thursday.
“A team has left for Delhi to verify Shailendra’s statement that his car was reduced to scrap in a road accident in 2002-03. The team will seek documents related to the car, the accident and insurance claims,” a top officer of Detection of Crime Branch of city police told The Indian Express.
Jaat is alleged to have been part of a gang of Asif Reza Khan and Aftab Ansari who allegedly kidnapped Rajkot jeweller Bhaksar Parekh and his friend Paresh Shah in November 2000 from Rajkot. Dubai based mafia and a London-based senior functionary of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed are alleged to have been part of the conspiracy to abduct the jeweller and seek Rs 20 crore ransom for funding terror activities in India. While Shah was rescued by police from Bharuch in an operation, Parekh was released by kidnappers after they were paid Rs 1.5 crore ransom by his family, DCB investigators say. Aftab Ansari is lodged in Kolkata jail after his conviction in the attack on American Centre in Kolkata while Asif Reza Khan was killed in an encouter with Rajkot city police.
Parekh was allegedly taken to Delhi and was confined at a place in Gurgoan. But he was released on December 1, 2000 after the ransom of Rs 1.5 crore was paid. DCB say the car in which Parekh was dropped to a place known as Addition Hospital from the place of his confinement belonged to Shailendra.
Shailendra has reportedly confessed before the DCB that he had lent the car to his cousins Surajprakash Jaat and Pradeepkumar Jaat, the duo who are alleged to have executed the kidnapping with the help of their friend Sanjay Jaat of Delhi and local gangs in Gujarat.
DCB say that 45-year-old Shailendra practices law at Delhi District Court. He was arrested by Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad on Sunday. He is 52nd person to be arrested by police in connection with the kidnapping case. Presently, he is in custody of DCB.
