As demonstrations over the cane charging on NIT students by the police in Srinagar continued in Jammu region of the state, BJP legislator Ravinder Raina boycotted the dinner hosted by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti at her official residence on Wednesday.

“I will continue to boycott all official functions until action is taken against policemen guilty of cane charging students unfurling the Tricolour on the NIT campus,’’ said the MLA from Nowshera.

“It is not only the worst kind of human rights violation, but also disrespect to the national flag,” he added.

“I cannot tolerate such things. The students were cane charged for unfurling the Tricolour in the Valley where our party ideologue Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee had laid down his life for upholding the Tricolour 64 years ago,” he said.

Raina added that though he is a BJP MLA, his “inner conscious” did not allow him to tolerate it and so he skipped the dinner.

Meanwhile, normal working in the high court and other subordinate courts were disrupted as lawyers suspended work in protest over the thrashing of NIT students. They also held demonstration demanding action against the guilty policemen.

In Jammu, students from various degree colleges and post graduate departments of Jammu University took out a joint procession from the campus towards Dogra Chowk and blocked vehicular traffic on the busy Tawi bridge for nearly an hour, while Hindu Sena, Ram Sena and Shiv Sena activists held demonstrations at Dogra Chowk, B C Road and Rani Park and burnt effigies of the coalition government.
