THE UTTAR Pradesh Police Thursday detained the nephew of NIA officer Tanzeel Ahmed’s brother-in-law for questioning along with one of his friends.
Investigating the officer’s murder in Bijnor on April 3, the police are also in the lookout for one Muneer Ahmed, an alleged gangster wanted in a 2015 murder that took place in Aligarh.
UP DGP Javeed Ahmed said police are “close to working out the case” and are currently verifying the evidence collected so far. Police identified the officer’s relative as Rehan, who has been detained along with one of his friends whose identity could not be ascertained. Sources said it was the friend who had provided “logistic support” to Rehan and Muneer.
Sources said Rehan had developed animosity with Ahmed after the latter reportedly refused to give him share in a property in Delhi — a shop located in the city’s Jamianagar locality. Muneer, on the other hand, suspected that Ahmed had tipped off the police about his involvement in the Aligarh murder case, sources added. Ever since Muneer’s name figured in the case, he left Bijnor and had been living in Jamianagar.

Sources added that police suspect Muneer had come to Bijnor to execute the crime, while Rehan was reportedly with him at the time.
“A clear picture will emerge only after sustained questioning of Muneer and some other suspects,” said a senior police officer privy to the investigation details. Police teams are conducting raids to trace Muneer.
Earlier, senior officials of NIA from Delhi held a closed-door meeting with officers of the state police in Bijnor Thursday. NIA officials are helping with the investigation.
Ahmed, an assistant commandant with the BSF on deputation to the NIA, was killed by two motorcycle-borne assailants in the early hours of Sunday, when he was driving back home with his family from a wedding near his village Sahaspur in Bijnor.
Ahmed’s wife Farzana also suffered injuries in the attack and is battling for life at Fortis Hospital in Noida.
