Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in the city on June 20 for taking part in the Second International Yoga Day scheduled to be held on June 21 at the Le Corbusier-designed Capitol Complex.
As per the tentative schedule, Modi will fly from Delhi at 9 pm on June 20 and land at Chandigarh Airport around 9.50 pm. He will be received by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal, Punjab and Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and UT Adviser Parimal Rai. Around 10.15 pm, he will leave for Punjab Raj Bhawan, where he will be staying overnight.
On June 21, Modi will leave for Capitol Complex at 6.20 am and will reach the venue around 6.30 am. After attending the one-hour event, he will leave the venue around 7.50 am for the airport from where he will fly back to Delhi at 8.30 am.
Tight security arrangements
Tight security arrangements will be made for the event. Around 5,000 police personnel will be deployed for security duty. The UT Police has asked for additional police force from Punjab and Haryana apart from the paramilitary forces. The security around the Capitol Complex has also been increased ahead of the event. The teams of police forces of Punjab, Haryana and paramilitary forces will arrive in the city on June 19. A team of around 35 members of the Special Protection Group (SPG) will land in the city on June 19 to review the security arrangements.
BJP planning welcome
The local unit of BJP is planning to give Modi a grand welcome. The local party leadership will meet on June 19 for finalising the plan. Without divulging the details, local BJP chief Sanjay Tandon said they would have to get a clearance from PMO for organising any activity for welcoming the Prime Minister.
Cong, HMT workers planning protest
The local unit of Congress is planning to hold a protest on June 20 and 21 against involvement of BJP councillor Satish Kainth in alleged land grabbing case, besides other issues. Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee president Pardeep Chhabra said that they would take a final call on Friday.
Members of HMT Bachao Sangharsh Samiti have announced that they would hold a protest march from the factory premises at Pinjore to Chandigarh on June 21, when the Prime Minister is set to visit the city. The workers have been demanding the release of their salaries pending for the last 23 months.
