The body of a missing Muslim boy, Irshaad Alam, 16, was found buried inside the compound of an oil mill owned by a Hindu man, Chander Saini, in Kawal village of Muzaffarnagar district early Thursday morning, sparking tension in the area. Police claimed Irshaad was in a relationship with Saini’s niece.
According to police, Irshaad went missing on the night of July 18. His father, Shakeel Ahmed, went to police, but was reportedly told to wait for the boy to return.
When Irshaad did not return home the next day, members of some Muslim organisations, along with the village head, surrounded the local police station. They met the SSP, who ordered a search for the boy.
Tracking his call detail records, police found that Irshaad’s last location was near the house of Saini’s niece. When the police went inside to question the family, the girl reportedly started crying.
“We called her brothers to the police station for interrogation, and they admitted to the crime. They told us that they had buried the body inside the compound of their uncle’s oil mill in the village,” said a police official.
A police team then went to the oil mill, where they found the body. Saini, his son Manoj, and the girl’s brother Pawan have been arrested.
Saini told the police that Irshaad used to stalk his niece. He said they had called the boy home to make him understand that he should not pursue her, but when he defied them, they strangulated him and buried the body.
Police said call detail records showed that Irshaad and the girl were in constant touch. “It was found that they were in a relationship. The youth was killed by the girl’s uncle, her cousin and her brother. We have booked the three under Section 302 of IPC,” said SSP, Muzzaffarnagar, Deepak Kumar.
He said the girl’s parents were dead, and she was living with her brother and his family.
According to the SSP, Irshaad had given a cellphone to the girl recently. “The girl’s brother caught her talking to him on the phone and was angry about their relationship… They killed the boy in their house, and took the body on a rickshaw to their uncle’s oil mill,” he said.
As the news spread about Irshaad’s body being recovered from Saini’s oil mill, hundreds of Muslims gathered outside the local police station. Later, some local political leaders also joined the crowd and demanded that the accused be handed over to them.
“The situation is under control at Kawal. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order,” said the SSP. The inspector of Jansath police station, Ajay Kumar, has been suspended.
It was in Kawal that a Muslim youth, Shahnawaz, and two Hindu youths, Sachin and Gaurav, were killed in August 2013, leading to communal violence in Muzaffarnagar.
