Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi convened a meeting Monday with Muslim political and non-political leaders and representatives from organisations run by the community to discuss a plan to start an agitation demanding reservation for Muslims.

Cutting across party lines, four MLAs from Mumbai, along with others were present at the meeting. They demanded 10 per cent reservation for Muslims in the education sector.

According to the leaders, their agitation would be non-political and details would be decided in the next meeting.

Those present at the meeting formed a non-political committee of 11 members for the purpose. The committee will decide the agenda after a discussion with other Muslim organisations and considering suggestions of NGOs.

“We have came together to demand the rightful reservation to Muslims. Various committees have suggested that the condition of Muslims in the state is worse than that of Dalits. We are not getting the kind of assurance from the government that the CM is giving to the Marathas,” said one of the MLAs who did not wish to be named.

SP MLA Abu Azmi said, “The demand for 16 per cent reservation to Marathas was rejected by the High Court and the Supreme Court but the Devendra Fadanavis government is still assuring them of the reservation. The High Court had agreed on giving 5 per cent reservation to Muslims, but no assurance is being given to us.”

Azmi added, “We are not opposing reservation for Marathas but we are just demanding our rights.”

MIM MLA Waris Pathan said, “The meeting was called to decide what can be done and we all are here as Muslims and not as political representatives.”

Congress MLA Nasim Khan said, “The meeting was organised to discuss the various issues of Muslims, including reservation. We have formed a non-political committee, which will now decide the further step.”
