A madrasa teacher in Kozhikode was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting his student, a minor girl.

The incident was reported close on the heels of a debate over alleged sexual abuse of girls and boys by ustads (teachers) in Kerala madrasas.

The arrested teacher was identified as Shameer Ashari, 30, a native of Malappuram. He has been working with a madrasa in Kozhikode for last one-and-half years.

The police said that the minor girl had complained to her parents, who, in turn, took up the matter with the police. “The ustad had aggressively touched her private parts. The girl informed her mother after she developed pain. We have produced the victim before a magistrate court to record her statement. She would be taken for a medical examination tomorrow to ascertain the nature of the sexual assault she was subjected to,” said the police sources.

As of now, only one student has complained against the ustad, the police said.

Last month, a Muslim woman journalist in Kozhikode had revealed about her madrasa days, marked by sexual abuse of girls and boys by ustads. Although the Muslim clerics had vehemently denied the allegation of sexual abuses at madrasas, few others too had come forward to recall their harrowing days. Film director Ali Akbar too had narrated how he was sodomized by his ustad in his madrasa days in 1970s.
