On Sunday evening, the fences of Central Park in Connaught Place were adorned by posters demanding justice for 32-year-old Siddharth Sharma, who was killed after being hit by a speeding Mercedes in Civil Lines on April 4. The park was the venue for a ‘Peace Meet’ held by Sharma’s family and friends demanding justice for him, and to “create awareness” about reckless driving and its repercussions.

“The point of this meet is to spread the message that every life is precious,” said Shilpa Mittal, Sharma’s sister. “… This can happen to anyone. The point is, people must learn to value their own lives and the lives of others.”

Elaborating on the motivation behind the meet, Sajeel Khanna, a friend of Sharma’s, said, “There are four or five points we want to make — need for justice and maximum punishment for culprits of such crimes, punishment for those who tamper with the law, strict vigilance and action against non-performing cops, and stricter laws without any loopholes, that cover both juveniles and, in cases like these, their parents.”

The meet was attended by friends and family of the victim, as well as people who heard about the gathering through acquaintances or social media. People lit also candles in memory of the victim, and placed flowers before his pictures.
