THE UTTAR Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into the role of five policemen accompanying SP (City) Mukul Dwivedi during the June 2 operation at Jawahar Bagh in Mathura, following allegations that they fled the spot when squatters mounted an attack.
Dwivedi was beaten up with rods, sticks and blunt objects causing serious head injuries that led to his death.
SSP Mathura Babloo Kumar has handed over the inquiry to Addl SP (Crime), Rajesh Kumar Sonkar, and has asked him to probe the role of the five policemen, including a head constable and four constables, who were accompanying Dwivedi and also the role of other personnel who took part in the operation.

Dwivedi’s family had alleged that the five policemen accompanying the officer had fled, leaving him alone.
Sonkar said, “The inquiry has started and statements of the five policemen are being recorded.”
Dwivedi’s younger brother Prafull said a probe should also be conducted into the circumstances under which his brother was sent to Jawahar Bagh. He added that “lapses” in police strategy should also be looked into.
