The Ministry of Labour has agreed to extend the maternity leave period from 12 to 26 weeks for women working in the private sector. If the recommendations of the Women and Child Development ministry are implemented, India will overtake developed nations such as France, Russia, Germany and Japan. Despite this initiative India still has a long way to go before it matches the benefits offered to mothers in Scandinavian countries.
