India seeks Iraq help in rescuing 39 hostages

India on Monday sought Iraq’s assistance in rescuing 39 Indians taken hostage in Mosul two years ago. Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar held talks with President Fuad Masum and other top Iraqi leaders in Baghdad on a range of issues, including the threat from Islamic State.

Akbar also held talks with president of Council of Representatives Salim al-Jabouri, Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Eshaiqer Al-Jaafari and National Security Adviser Faleh al-Fayyadh.

The Iraqi leadership assured full cooperation and support in the matter, the MEA said here.

The two sides also discussed bilateral engagement in spheres of trade, investment, energy security, defence and security, and counter-terrorism.
