More than 100 lawyers marched from the Supreme Court to Bar Council of India Wednesday, demanding “strict and time bound action” against the lawyers who assaulted JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and journalists on Patiala House Courts premises.
Marching under a banner of “Lawyers for Democracy and Justice”, the lawyers urged the council to punish those found guilty within two months and ensure that “democratic space and right to access to justice is not curtailed in any manner”.
Kanhaiya’s lawyer, Advocate Rajiv Kumar, who was also assaulted the day the JNUSU president was escorted to court, led the march.
The lawyers marched silently, many holding placards stating “No to goondaism and lumpenism in courts” and “Maintain sanctity of courts”. The lawyers placed their demands to the council through Supreme Court Advocate Ravindra S Garia.
