The AKG Memorial library in Malappuram district of Kerala, allegedly set on fire by BJP and RSS supporters in March, has managed to receive double the number of books that were damaged in the incident.
This has been made possible by the efforts and support of local populace and well wishers who started an online campaign and urged people to donate books to the library. The Facebook page ‘Book Collection’ started by one Julius Mirshad along with others now has more than 1,300 members. Over 10,000 books were donated.
According to a report in NewsMinute, the books have been donated by people in countries including the UK, US and UAE. Indian university students including that of JNU, HCU and DU also participated actively in the book donation drive.
Two suspected BJP supporters, Satish (25) and Vinod (30), were arrested by the police on 23 March in connection with the incident.
Property and books worth around Rs 40 lakh was destroyed in the fire which allegedly happened because of a quarrel between the RSS and CPI(M) members a day ago on 22 March.
