A couple has been arrested in Kerala’s Idukki district on charges of torturing their nine-year-old son. They were identified as Pazheparambil Nazeer and Selin, hailing from Adimali in Idukki.
Nazeer is already in judicial custody in connection with a drug peddling case. The victim is receiving treatment at Government Medical College in Kochi.
Besides the victim, the couple has a seven-year-old-son and a three-month-old daughter. The two children have now been lodged in a government-run shelter. The Idukki district child welfare committee Thursday took over the responsibility of the protection of the three children.
Police said the couple had been allegedly torturing the victim for the past three months. The boy has reportedly told the Ernakulam additional district magistrate that his parents poured boiling water over him and beat him up with an iron rod.
“On Tuesday, a woman from the neighbourhood heard the boy crying for food. On looking through a window, she saw that the boy, locked up in a room, was unable to stand. She alerted locals, who rescued the boy and rushed him to hospital at Adimali. The mother had tried to prevent others from taking the boy to a hospital,” said a police officer.
The couple has been charged under Section 326 (b) of IPC and the Juvenile Justice Act, police said.
