A National Conference leader and the party’s candidate against Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in the recent bypoll from Anantnag constituency, Iftikhar Hussain Misgar, Sunday quit mainstream politics and joined an anti-India protest outside his residence.

Misgar is the first mainstream politician in the Valley to announce his resignation after the Hurriyat Conference called for a social boycott of pro-India political leaders in Kashmir.

“I do not need any security. I need the security of my own people,” he said while addressing a gathering in Anantnag.

He was heard shouting slogans like “Bharat ke aawanun main aag laga dou, aag laga dou (burn down the constitutional institutions of India)” before a crowd of people outside his residence. “Bharat ka jo yaar hai… (One who is India’s friend),” Misgar shouted. “… Ghadar hai, ghadar hai(… is a traitor)),” the protesters shouted back.

Misgar could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. However, a video of him shouting anti-India slogans has gone viral on social media.

A PDP stronghold, Anantnag has been the worst hit during the ongoing protests as more than 20 civilians have been killed and over 559 civilians have been injured in the district since July 8.
