An alleged serial killer and rapist was arrested in Karnataka when he was boarding a train Friday. Police hope the arrest will help them crack more than a dozen cases of rape and murder reported across the state.

Chitradurga SP M N Anucheth identified the accused as 40-year-old Krishnamurthy alias Krishna, a resident of Kallugudde village in Chikmagalur district.

Anucheth said preliminary investigation suggested that four women, including a minor, had been raped and murdered, allegedly by the accused in the last two months. Police also believe he was involved in similar offences in Tumkur, Chitradurga and Davanagere districts.

Police sources claimed Krishna had confessed to about 20 murders and, in most cases, he allegedly smashed his victim’s head with a rock. Police said Krishna used to allegedly target the destitute and the mentally ill. He would lure them with liquor and money to an isolated spot, police said.
