A lawyer Wednesday filed a petition in a Kanpur court against Bollywood actor Salman Khan for hurting the “prestige” of women through his rape remark, initiating what could bring fresh trouble for the actor.

Accepting the petition, which seeks Khan to be booked under Sections 294 (obscene acts or words in public) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC, the court has asked the counsel for complainant Manoj Dixit to submit statements and proofs in support of the petition before July 14.

Khan had Monday told an entertainment website while promoting his upcoming film ‘Sultan’ that “when I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman”.

“An actor followed by lakhs of youths making a statement that he feels like a rape victim after the shooting is absurd and (full of) revile for women who had to face inhuman incidents like rapes. He is not even married, how can he feel what a woman feels after being raped?” said the lawyer, whose counsel Kavita Dixit filed the complaint on his behalf.

The counsel said the two sections – 509 and 294 – have provisions for one year and three months of jail term, respectively. While Khan’s remark drew criticism on social media, the actor also found support among a section who believed he was being “unnecessarily targeted”.

Although the actor’s father, writer Salim Khan, had apologised for the remarks, the National Commission for Women Tuesday demanded a public apology and an explanation from the actor within seven days, with its chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam saying Salman would be summoned “if the commission was not satisfied with the explanation”.
