JULY has recorded the cheapest last-minute air fares since April across domestic routes, indicates a study done by online travel company MakeMyTrip. While July saw a last-minute average airfare ranging up to Rs.4402, May had recorded it to be the highest at Rs 5514.

A lean period and various offers announced by the airlines to boost passenger demand have been cited as the reasons for the trend. While Air India came up with offers for concessional fares for students and discounted last-minute bookings if switched from Rajdhani, other airlines also confirmed of bringing down the fares to boost off-season sale.

“Air India announced special fares for students and also announced concessional fares for last-minute bookings. We also saw an equally good response for the Rajdhani-Air India scheme where AC II tier passengers did actually opt for flying in the economy class at the same rate as that of a train ticket. Plus, Air India has started some additional domestic routes,” an official spokesperson from Air India said.

“With June and July being the lean period, we did resort to introducing some concessions in airfares to boost up the sale. We have also come up with schemes like ‘Flexible Fares’ and ‘Lite Fares’ in August which allows passengers to switch between two airlines with no added cost,” an official spokesperson from Indigo said.

“While the domestic fare market has seen a growth of more than 21 per cent on a year-on-year basis, last-minute travel bookings have seen an upswing. There has been a growth in passenger traffic this year with overall decline in fares on domestic routes. The market continues to grow at a healthy rate,” Gupta added.
