Addressing students of Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday cracked a joke on water-logging and heavy downpour that has brought the city to a standstill. Besides speaking on the issue of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, Kerry tried to make the environment lighter by asking if the students came in boats?

“You guys all deserve an award for being able to get here today. I don’t know if you came in boats or amphibious vehicles of some kind but I salute you for being here. Thank you very very much,” said Kerry. Kerry is in India as part of the second Indo-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue.

John Kerry’s proposed visit to three religious sites in the city was cancelled  due to heavy rains since morning. Kerry was scheduled to visit the Gauri Shankar temple, Jama Masjid and Gurdwara Sisganj Sahib on Wednesday.

The US leader has had a difficult time with the city’s traffic ever since he landed on Monday night. His convoy was stuck on Satya Marg in Lutyens Delhi for an hour on Monday by a “spillover effect” owing to water-logging in the main carriageways.

Traffic police refused to comment on the arrangements they made for Kerry and the areas in which his motorcade encountered snarls.

Speaking at the IIT (Delhi), John Kerry stressed on the importance of improving the India-US relationship. “Strengthening Indo-US relations is a top priority for the United States… US and India have to keep faith in our democratic values and respect the rights of all our citizens.  At a time when countries seek to address issues through use of force, US-India have upheld the rule-based international order… The common philosophies of India & US are responsible for our ties,” Kerry said, at the Town hall session at IIT (Delhi).
