Two Special Police Officers (SPOs), who had deserted the police to join terrorist ranks last month, were shot dead by security forces during an encounter in Doda during wee hours of Thursday.
Identified as Gul Mohammad and Riaz Ahmed, the slain terrorists had fled along with service weapons from their respective police posts in Doda on September 8.
Giving details, an officiating defence spokesperson SN Acharya said that an operation was launched around midnight in North West of Doda around midnight. After sometime, as the contact was established, security forces challenged the terrorists who, however, opened fire.
In the ensuing fire fight, two terrorists were killed around 4.30 am. An AK rifle and an INSAS were recovered from slain terrorists, he said, adding that police have identified them as the ones who had deserted the organisation one and a half month ago.
The operation was in progress till reports last came in, the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, another terrorist was killed by troops near the Line of Control in Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district on Wednesday night. This followed an encounter when troops foiled an infiltration attempt by terrorists from the side of Pakistan occupied Kashmir earlier in the afternoon.
Pointing out that an army personnel Lance Naik Govind Singh was also killed in the encounter, sources said that Army troops had laid ambush at a place near the LoC following tip off about likely infiltration by a group of terrorists from the side of Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
The area has been cordoned off and searches are in progress to flush out terrorist, if any, having managed to sneak into the Indian territory, sources added.
