A day after two brothers were allegedly beaten to death by locals in a village of Chaibasa district, on suspicion that they were involved in stealing cattle and other livestock from houses, six people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murders.

The incident was reported from Udajo village, under Badapasia gram panchayat in the district.

According to police, Brij Mohan Laguri, a resident of Udajo, had lodged a complaint with Jetya police on Saturday alleging that his younger brothers Sanatan (32) and Surja Laguri (25), and their cousin Shukra Koda (30), were killed by the villagers.

The complaint says the villagers accused them of stealing the ox of one Lakshman Laguri, aside from other livestock from several houses in the village. Brij Mohan named 11 people, including Lakshman and Budhram Laguri, in the FIR.

The police have found the bodies of the Laguri brothers and learnt that Koda, the cousin, had fled. The officer-in-charge of Jetya police station said the six arrested are Ankura Laguri, Brojo Laguri, Subhash Laguri, Lakshman Laguri, Nanki Laguri and Budhram Laguri. “The name of village Munda (or the head) has also cropped up. We are trying to trace him,” the OC said.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Jagannathpur) Manoj Kumar Jha said: “Our team reached the spot today and found that Shukra Koda, who had been caught by the villagers, managed to give them the slip at night. The accused led us to the bodies of Sanatan and Surja, which were disposed of in a forest nearby.”

The officer said the accused had tried to burn the bodies to prevent identification. “Surja’s body was partially burnt; Sanatan’s body was almost completely charred,” he said. They were reportedly beaten to death. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur. Further investigations are on.
