The 68-year-old leader was admitted to Apollo Hospitals after she complained of fever and dehydration on September 22.  According to Apollo, a team of specialists like cardiologists, respiratory physicians, consultants for infectious diseases, diabetologist and endocrinologist treated Jayalalithaa, who was put on respiratory support and required a longer stay at the hospital as she had an infection.

Reacting to the development, AIADMK leader C R Saraswathi said, “We are so happy, everyone has prayed for Amma because they love her so much.”

Earlier today, the ruling AIADMK party said Jayalalithaa will soon be moved out of the critical care care unit (CCU) to a private room. “The lung infection is under control. She has passed the critical stage. The respiratory system is being weaned away. It is being used on and off,” a senior party leader said

Ever since her hospitalisation, state ministers and AIADMK cadres have been organising special pujas at various temples across the state, praying for her speedy recovery. Prayers had also been held in places of religious worship in Erode and Karur, among others.

Late last week, an official document had stated that Jayalalithaa used her left thumb impression in the election document of her party nominee for November 19 bypoll to Thirupparankundram as she had an “inflamed right hand”.

The document was attested by Dr P Balaji, Prof of Minimal Access Surgery, Madras Medical College and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and signed by Dr Babu K Abraham of Apollo Hospitals as witness. A galaxy of political leaders, including BJP chief Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, DMK treasurer M K Stalin, besides film personalities like Rajinikanth and Kushboo, who is also the Congress spokesperson, had visited the CM

Last month, Finance Minister O Panneerselvam was handed over portfolios held by Jayalalithaa.
