FEARING POLITICAL backlash over the spread of Jat agitation, the BJP has launched a massive damage control exercise with the party leadership asking its state unit in Haryana to organise peace marches from mohallas (neighbourhoods) to the state capitals and reach out to all parties for cooperation in resolving the crisis.
According to the plan, while the Amit Shah-appointed central team led by Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu will study the possibility of providing reservation for Jats at the national level, another panel at the state level, with representatives from all parties, will discuss provisions in the Bill that would be prepared to provide quota for the community.
Party leaders have expressed fear that the Jat agitation could spread to other states. Besides Haryana, the Jats have a presence in Punjab, J&K, HP, Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand and Delhi. Also, leaders fear the agitation could give a moral boost to other agrarian communities like the Patidars and Kapus.
