A 35-year-old villager and his two minor sons sustained severe burns when some unidentified persons set them on fire after sprinkling petrol inside their house at Ucad village near Mendhar in border Poonch district during wee hours of Wednesday.

Identified as Nazakat Hussain, 35, his two sons Tameem (5) and Tousif (4), the victims were asleep together on a cot inside the house. They have been hospitalised.

Pointing out that both the children were from Nazakat’s first wife who had died nearly three years ago, sources said that his second wife along with her child was asleep on another cot in the same room. She and her child were safe, they added.

Quoting Nazakat, police said he had come outside his two-room house around 1.30 am to respond to the call of nature. However, when he was returning to his room, he heard the footsteps of someone running, but he could not see anyone in view of maize fields around the house.

After returning to the room, as he again fell asleep, someone sprinkled petrol and set them ablaze. His second wife who along with her son was asleep nearby woke up on hearing their screams, but she did not see anyone.

Pointing out that Nazakat had kept the doors of the room open as it was hot during night and there had been no power supply in the area at that time, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Mendhar, Shahid Naheem, said that two petrol bottles were also seized on the spot. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and arson against unidentified people, he added.
