An alleged rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Jalaun district has turned out to be a case of honour killing following the police investigation. The victim’s father was arrested Thursday night after he confessed to have killed his daughter after finding her with a youth from their locality.

The body of the victim, bearing injury caused by blunt object on head, was found lying in her house in Konch police station area on May 12. Her father, a farmer, later filed an FIR against a neighbour Jitendra Kushwaha alias Chhotu (23) accusing him of raping and later killing the minor girl.

The father had alleged in his complaint that the incident took place when he was sleeping on the terrace of the house and his wife and son had gone to a relative’s house.

During preliminary investigation, the police, however, found loopholes in the father’s story as he kept changing his statement about the sequence of the incident. Finding it suspicious, the police probed into the matter extensively.

While interrogating Jitendra, police came to know that he had an affair with the girl. He told the police that the girl’s father had caught them while he had gone to meet her in the night on May 11. He also claimed that he had escaped from the house somehow and later in the morning came to know that the girl was dead.

The police also talked to other people in the neighbourhood who corroborated the fact that the youth was at his home in the morning of May 12 when the girl’s father had started screaming that his daughter had been killed.

Station House Officer, Konch police station, Manveer Singh said that suspecting the father’s role in the incident, they went to his house only to know that he had not returned home since after the girl’s funeral. The police put his phone on surveillance and found that he was talking to his wife and other relatives and even once referred about “having done wrong”.

The police traced him on Thursday and brought him to the police station where he broke down during interrogation. “He has confessed to have killed his daughter. He claimed that on May 11 night, while he was sleeping on the terrace he heard some disturbance downstairs. He came to find the youth talking to his daughter and pounced upon him but he managed to escape with the help of the girl,” said Singh.

The father further told the police that he assaulted the girl with a stick and locked her inside a room after tying her legs and hands.

“While the girl was seriously injured and kept asking for water, the accused ignored her. Next morning, he opened the door to find the girl lying dead,” said SHO, adding that the man’s wife and son were not present in the house when the incident occurred.

The father had earlier got an FIR lodged against Jitendra, also a farmer, on charges of rape and murder. He had alleged that Jitendra killed his daughter fearing she may inform her family about the rape. The body was sent for autopsy, which did not give any opinion about sexual assault. Vaginal slides were prepared and sent for examination. The autopsy report had stated cause of death as ante-mortem head injury.

The man also told the police that he was planning to eliminate Jitendra too since after his daughter’s murder.
