While the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh combine have been aggressively taking up the issue of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, the national flag on Tuesday was seen hanging upside-down in the Jalandar mayor’s office.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti, who belongs to the BJP, posed for several photos, sitting in front of the Tricolour.

The Congress and SAD have demanded action against the mayor and also sought a public apology from the BJP. The Congress Sewa Dal also filed a police complaint against the mayor.

According to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971, displaying the Indian National Flag with the upside-down is an offence with a maximum punishment of upto three years imprisonment and fine.

The photos went viral before someone pointed out to the mayor that the national flag was hanging upside-down.

Interestingly, the flag was brought to the mayor’s office on Monday and and by Tuesday the photos were up on all social media sites and WhatsApp groups.

In the photos, the mayor is seen sitting between the upside-down Tricolor and Punjab government’s blue flag with PM Modi’s photo above his chair. The photos of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP Veteran leader LK Advani were also seen hanging in his office room.

When the mayor was asked to comment on the incident, Sunil said that he didn’t notice the flag hanging upside-down and wasn’t aware of who could have posted the photos on social media sites. “I have written a letter to the Commissioner Corporation to investigate who has done this,” said Jyoti.

Senior deputy mayor of Jalandhar Corporation and SAD leader, Kamaljit Bhaia, has demanded action against those who disrespected the national flag. Kamaljit wondered what message the mayor was trying to send across by committing such  acts.

A Congress Sewa Dal leader filed a complaint with the Jalandhar police against the mayor.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jalandhar, Harjit Singh, said that he is investigating the matter and who so ever will be found guilty, an action would be taken, he added.
