The Congress Friday asked Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to reconsider the decision to use a luxury car — a Jaguar XE Portfolio costing Rs 48.25 lakh — at a time the country is reeling under acute agricultural distress.
“Sumitra Mahajan’s achhe din have come. Sabka saath, sabka vikaas nahin ho raha… Kisi ka na saath diya par apna vikas toh zaroor kar diya,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari remarked when asked about the Lok Sabha Secretariat purchasing the luxury sedan.
“The Speaker should really reconsider that at a point when one third of the country is reeling under acute agricultural distress would it be prudent for the Lok Sabha Secretariat to make such an extravagant investment? I leave it to her wisdom to think about it,” he told reporters at the AICC briefing.
The Indian Express on Friday reported about the Speaker getting a new official car. The Lok Sabha Secretariat cited security reasons behind the decision to buy the vehicle, delivered at the Speaker’s official residence in Delhi on Monday. Mahajan had used a Toyota Camry as her official vehicle so far.
