A gynaecologist and a staff nurse in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district have been arrested on culpable homicide charges after an infant’s head reportedly got severed from its body while the doctor and other staff were pulling it out of the mother’s womb during the delivery Sunday.
The patient, 32-year-old Musarfeen, was admitted to the Rampur district hospital on Saturday for delivery.
District magistrate Rakesh Kumar Singh visited the hospital Tuesday and asked Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Jyotsana Pant to probe the incident.

He told The Indian Express: “Dr Tayabba, who had performed the delivery, and a staff nurse have been arrested on charges of negligence as well as culpable homicide. I visited the patient, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Her condition is stable.”
Rampur’s Chief Medical Officer S L Saraswat said, “The infant’s head got severed from its body as the doctor tried to pull it out. Prima facie, I have been told that the baby had already died inside the womb. Since the labour pain had started, the doctor decided to go for normal delivery instead of a surgery.”
Sources said that the doctor and other medical staff fled after the head got severed.
Another doctor had to be sent to bring out the infant’s head, which was inside the mother’s womb, they added.
“The exact turn of events would be known after the detailed inquiry by Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Jyotsana Pant,” said Dr Saraswat.
