Denying any romantic relationship with the UK-based woman who has filed a sexual harassment complaint against him with Ludhiana police, Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh Thursday claimed “they were good friends”. Sardar, addressing a press conference at Sector-42 Hockey Stadium, also claimed that the woman “misused” his social media accounts to post that they were getting married.

“We were good friends. There was no romantic relationship. I respect women and I am hurt by the words she has used against me,” said the 29-year-old who is representing Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League.

Sardar said the two had met before London Olympics through Facebook and then they had not met for the past one year.

Singh also refuted the charges about rape and forcing the woman to undergo abortion.

The Indian captain said the girl would use his Twitter and Facebook accounts and that he had informed the Hockey India coaches about this when the team was playing in Spain last year. “She had my email ids and all. My friends also used it before. She took my passwords from them. She used to tweet and retweet. She posted on her own that we are getting married. At that time, I was playing in Spain and I also told the coaches about this. I will only say my focus is on hockey.”
