Stating that there was complete breakdown of law and order in Punjab and accusing the BJP government in Haryana of being unable to protect the state’s interests, the Haryana Congress on Friday demanded President’s rule in both the states.

The Haryana Congress MLAs, including Kuldeep Sharma, Karan Singh Dalal, Shakuntala and Jaiveer, claimed that they had gone to Kapoori village in Punjab, where the foundation stone of the SYL canal has been laid, and found that JCB machines were being used to fill up the canal, in defiance of the Supreme Court orders.

The MLAs alleged that the filling up the canals was going on unhindered over the past few days. The landowners have been reclaiming their land after the Punjab Vidhan Sabha passed the Bill re-vesting the land acquired for SYL to them, they said.

Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the Haryana government has failed to protect the state’s interests. “They are only sitting in air-conditioned rooms and passing resolutions to condemn what Punjab has done. They should be out in the field and checking what is happening on the ground,” he said.

Hooda demanded President’s rule be imposed in both Punjab and Haryana. He further said that the Haryana government failed to handle the situation during the agitation by the Jats. “We have been demanding a judicial inquiry into the agitation so that the facts emerge. The government remained a mute spectator during the agitation. The government has failed on all fronts,” he said.

Another Congress MLA Kuldeep Sharma said the Punjab government was playing votebank politics, while the Haryana government was taking no action.
