Income Tax officials in Surat have raided business premises of well-known builder Mukesh Patel, reportedly acting on a lead that he was accepting now-defunct notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 from different parties to book flats in his project in Varachha area of the city.
After accepting cash, Patel allegedly prepared back-dated documents regarding booking of new flats. According to I-T officials, they discovered several such documents from his office and questioned him.
In September, Patel and another businessman Mahesh Sawani had organised an event to felicitate BJP president Amit Shah and Patidar BJP leaders. The event was disrupted following protests by members of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS). Earlier, he was instrumental in brokering peace between the Gujarat government, then headed by Anandiben Patel, and PAAS convener Hardik Patel during the reservation stir. “The raids are still on. There is nothing to hide… ,” he said.
