Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Wednesday arrested by J-K police after he tried to visit the martyrs’ graveyard in Srinagar’s old city on the occasion of 86th Kashmir Martyrs day. Police, however, said he was released. Geelani is already under house arrest.

Police officials said the Geelani was arrested by the police after he tried to march from his residence at Hyderpora toward the old city in the morning. “After he was arrested, he was taken to local police station. We released him immediately,” said a senior police official, adding that he was arrested outside his residence.
A Hurriyat member told The Indian Express that he Geelani was marching alongwith his supporters when he was arrested. “He has returned from the police station,” he said.
Geelani had called for Naqshband Sahib chalo in the old city– where the 21 martyrs are buried.
