THREE DAYS after the body of a 17-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Ludhiana’s Ladhowal city, the police have arrested her father — a resident of Uttar Pradesh — for allegedly committing the crime.
Claiming it to be a case of honour killing, police on Tuesday said the accused — who hailed from Bijnor — suspected that his daughter was having an affair and brought her to Punjab on the pretext of visiting their native village Tarn Taran.
Police said on July 15 night, the father and his accomplice allegedly strangled the girl to death. Later, they hung her on a tree on GT road.
The case was cracked after the police recovered a SIM card from the trousers of the victim. The police then contacted the victim’s uncle in Faridkot, who identified the body.
“The father, who has confessed to his crime, has been arrested. His accomplice is absconding,” DCP Dhruman Nimbale said. The FIR was registered on the complaint of the former sarpanch of the village where the body was found hanging.
