Accused of buying and raping a minor girl, former Goa Education Minister and St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate filed a bail application before the Children’s Court in Panaji on Saturday, claiming innocence and stating that it is a politically motivated “conspiracy”. The bail plea will be heard on Monday, the defence counsel, Rajeev Gomes, said.

The bail application states: “I was introduced to the minor girl in the second week of February 2016, and employed her in one of my establishments as a sales girl at her request. However, she was terminated from service after having reported to have stolen money from the cash counter.”

Monserrate said the girl vowed to avenge this dismissal and subsequently came up with an “imaginary story”.
