A month after a headless body of a woman was recovered from a garbage bin in Ramapuram in Chennai, investigators have identified it as the body of a small-time film actress, Sasirekha, 32. She was allegedly murdered by her husband, Ramesh, and his girlfriend, Lawkiiyaa Kashiiv, also an actress, police said.

While the body was recovered from a garbage bin on January 5, the head was recovered from a canal near Kolapakkam, about two kilometres away, earlier this week, after Ramesh, 36, and Kashiiv, 22, were arrested from a house in the suburbs. The accused were sent to judicial custody on Friday.

Sasirekha is reported to have played a prominent character role in the yet to be released film, Naalai Mudhal Kudikka Maatein. Kashiiv’s film Karuppasamypuram is also due for release soon.

A senior police officer said Ramesh had a talent agency that promised aspiring actors roles in the Tamil film industry. “Sasirekha, a divorcee and mother of an eight-year-old, married him last August. But trouble began after Ramesh began an affair with Kashiiv, an aspiring actress. Sasirekha filed some complaints against Ramesh,” said the officer.

He said two complaints were filed by Sasirekha against Ramesh — for allegedly kidnapping her son and domestic violence. “Our investigation found that the kidnap complaint was false, but the domestic violence complaint did trouble Ramesh and Kashiiv,” said the officer.

Ramesh is reported to have left Sasirekha and moved in with Kashiiv, but following the police complaints, Kashiiv reportedly moved out. But curiously, Sasirekha, Ramesh and Kashiiv later lived together.

“Interrogations reveal that she was finally murdered by Ramesh and Kashiiv on January 4. After killing her by hitting her on the head, Ramesh dumped the head in a canal, about two kilometres from the place where he dumped the body, both covered in plastic bags. The body was also covered in a bed sheet,” said a police official.

The case reached the police after Sasirekha’s parents filed a missing complaint. “When we started the probe, Ramesh was the first target as he himself was missing. We finally traced him and Kashiiv at a house in Valasaravakkam, after tracking his phone over a few days. With their help, we recovered the head from the canal,” said the officer.
