Leader of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Hardik Patel, has been detained by Rajkot police while he was trying to go to attend the India-South Africa ODI cricket match.
Hardik, who had threatened to protest from inside the cricket stadium along with Patidars to press for their demand of reservation for Patidar community, has been detained along with three of his associates from around 1km away from the cricket stadium.
Jamnagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradeep Sejul said that Hardik and his associates were detained by a team of Rajkot police led by Rajkot (Rural) SP Gagandeep Gambhir.
“A team of Rajkot police led by Rajkot SP (Gagandeep Gambhir) has detained him from near Nyara Cross Roads,” Sejul said. PAAS led by Hardik had threatened to protest from inside the stadium.
However, when they could not secure tickets for the match, the PAAS leaders had threatened to gherao the stadium and the buses of the players on their route to the stadium from hotels. However, amid those threats, the two teams reached safely to the stadium in the afternoon around 12:15.
Meanwhile, the cricket match has started peacefully at Rajkot amid tight security. Police have kept a close vigil on anybody entering the stadium with thorough checking to make sure that no objectionable item gets entry with the spectators inside the stadium. Even the highways leading to Rajkot city in the periphery are witnessing heavy checking.
