With a view to attract Dalits to its fold following the anger in the community against the BJP in the wake of Dalit flogging in Una, the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Friday announced to launch the “Dalit Swadhikar Andolan” on October 2 that will continue till assembly polls in December 2017.
The party leaders submitted a 25-point charter of demand to the state government Saturday, asking it to implement the demands of the Dalits in the state.
Addressing mediapersons, GPCC(Scheduled Castes cell) president Naushad Solanki said that the party will launch the agitation if the state government did not agree to implement their demands. He said the party will organise rallies, sit-ins, demonstrations, blockade of roads and railway tracks during the year-long agitation.
“If the BJP fails to implement the demands pertaining to SCs, we will implement it when we come to power after the 2017 assembly elections,” said Solanki.
The Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Shankersinh Vaghela said that the atrocities against Dalits had increased since the BJP government came to power in the state. He demanded the state government to fill up the backlog of approximately 50,000 vacancies meant for Dalits. Among the major demands include CBI probe into Una flogging incident and proper implementation of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015.
