The Congress on Monday asked the government whether concerns associated with khesari dal, a pulse banned since 1961 but recently cleared for consumption by a research panel headed by Indian Council of Medical Research, have been addressed or is the government “experimenting and playing with the health of the people”.
Khesari dal was banned after its consumption was linked to a neurological disorder called lathyrism (paralysis in the legs).
Questioning that why didn’t the government inform the people about the decision, the Congress said the Centre would be held solely responsible if consumption of the dal causes paralysis to “even one person”.
“If the government has taken a step detrimental to the health of people, like lifting the ban on khesari dal, why haven’t the people of the country been informed? Why are we coming to know of this through RTI applications and media investigations?” Congress spokesperson R P N Singh said.
