A Goa-based model, Siddesh Dashrath Juvekar, has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a 2013 rape case. South Goa Additional Sessions Judge Sherin Paul also sentenced Juvekar to three years imprisonment for cheating the 26-year-old victim of Rs 5 lakh. Both the sentences will run concurrently.

Juvekar, the runner-up of a 2015 model hunt contest, has also been ordered to pay Rs 7 lakh to the victim.

The complainant will file an appeal before the court next week. “Seven years is the minimum sentence for rape, but given the nature of the crime, the quantum of sentence must be enhanced to the maximum provided under the law. We will file an appeal in the high court next week,” said the victim’s counsel, Aires Rodrigues.

Juvekar was accused of raping the victim on the false pretext of marriage.

“On July 4, 2014, the case was discharged by the South Goa Additional Sessions Judge. We moved the high court challenging the order,” said Rodrigues.

The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court set aside the lower court’s order and directed Juvekar to appear before the Margao Sessions Court.
