A WEEK after a group of gaurakshaks allegedly assaulted seven Dalits and flogged four of them publicly in Una taluka of Gir-Somnath district, the superintendent of police (SP) on Sunday suspended Una police inspector and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in charge of the area where the alleged incident had taken place. The suspensions came on the day a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) met the victim family on Sunday.
Gir-Somnath SP HR Chaudhary issued orders suspending Una police inspector NU Zala and assistant sub-inspector Kanchanben Parmar with immediate effect on Sunday. “They have been suspended for dereliction of duty. The lady ASI was in-charge of Kanakhara outpost in whose jurisdiction the incident took place.
We have previously suspended two head constables,” Chadudhary told The Indian Express.\
The suspensions comes around a week after seven Dalits were allegedly attacked by five gaurakshaks or cow protection activists in Mota Samadhiyala village on July 12. The gauraskshaks assaulted the Dalits with iron pipes, sticks and knife alleging they were slaughtering a cow. However, the Dalits said that the cow had died in a nearby village and that they were merely skinning its carcass. But the attackers pushed four of the Dalit family in their car, took them to Una town, tied them to their car with ropes and flogged them publicly all the way to Una police station. As police arrived on the spot, the five assailants sped away in their Xylo car.
The SP had said earlier that they were inquiring into the role of Una police in the incident. Two days after the incident, Chaudhary had suspended head constables Hardevsinh Parmar, Kanji Chudasama. While Parmar was part of crime detection team of Una police, Chudasama was manning the police station at the time of the alleged incident.
Meanwhile, Raju Parmar, a member of NCSC visited the family members of Balu Solanki in Mota Samadhiyala village and raised suspicion over the manner in which the local police handled the entire case. He said he would demand a probe by some other agency in the incident.
Police have booked five persons for attempt to murder and all of them have been arrested.
